Crime pays. At least at this year’s Locarno Film Festival. The Golden Leopard winning film Mantagheye Bohrani – Critical Zone turned Ali Ahmadzadeh illegally. But since it’s an Iranian production, the disobedience turns into a political protest once morest the regime. Creativity proves itself here in resistance to artistic freedom, as is so often the case in the cinema nation of Iran. And as is so often the case, the regime reacted with pressure and a ban on leaving the country. The filmmaker, born in 1986, was not able to present his film personally in Locarno. His exiled producer Sina Ataeian Dena accepted the Golden Leopard. He and the director had received threats from the Iranian security apparatus beforehand. The Locarno Festival called on the Iranian regime to release Ahmadzadeh immediately.
