BEIJING (AP) — Typhoon Talim swept through China’s southern provinces on Tuesday, toppling billboards and trees before weakening to a tropical storm.

Talim made landfall in the coastal city of Beihai, Guanqxi province, at 5:45 a.m. local time with winds of 90 km/h (56 mph), the regional meteorological office told reporters.

Authorities in the cities of Fangchenggang and Beihai suspended classes, public transportation and outdoor construction work due to torrential rains and storm surges.

In the city of Nanning, the railway suspended 69 passenger trains and diverted another 12 to alternative routes.

Beihai residents posted photos of fallen trees and crushed motorcycles under rubble on social media. State broadcaster CCTV showed emergency workers removing tree branches from streets and avenues.

On Tuesday followingnoon, the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Bureau withdrew the warning for the typhoon, which had weakened to a tropical storm by noon.

The National Meteorological Center forecast that Talim will continue to weaken as it moves northwest and will dissipate in the mountains of northern Vietnam on Wednesday.

Rain and gales are still forecast in the southern provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian.

Like much of the northern hemisphere, China has suffered record temperatures and flooding so far this year.
