Rising Drought Crisis in Wallonia: Impacts, Forecasts, and Measures

2023-07-18 13:04:50

The drought is gradually increasing in Wallonia, while a dry to very dry zone is gradually taking shape in the province of Luxembourg, the south-east of the province of Liège and certain parts of the province of Namur, indicated the Drought unit of the Regional Crisis Center on Tuesday, following a meeting between the various interlocutors of the water and environment sector in Wallonia. Kayakers will not get in the water, as the flow rates are currently insufficient to practice.

Despite some rainfall and generally cooler temperatures expected in the coming days, this drought is set to spread further. The area of extreme drought which worried the south-east of the province of Liège and the north of the province of Luxembourg on Tuesday will gain ground over the next ten days to affect almost the whole of the province of Luxembourg, according to forecasts. from the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM).

The bulk of the precipitation was concentrated in Hainaut (Trivieres recording the maximum, at 31.3 mm) and Walloon Brabant. The basins in the center of Wallonia, Sambre, Meuse upstream and downstream, Lesse and Ourthe (with a maximum of 9.66 mm), as well as those in the northwest, Escaut-Lys and Dendre were the least watered.

The forecast calls for light rain before the weekend and, next week, up to 20 mm locally accumulated. “It’s not huge, but it’s certainly a very good thing compared to the two millimeters and a few that fell between July 7 and July 14 in the central region”, noted Julie Mathen, communication officer at the Public Service of Wallonia. .

The rains of the last few days have had little effect on the level of the dams-reservoirs, and on the flow rates of the rivers. Because of this low flow, kayaking is prohibited everywhere, except on the lower Lesse and a section of the Amblève.
