While trimming a hedge in Reet, Johan Vanhille fell victim to an attack by Asian hornets. Stung six times, the communal employee was taken to hospital. “I felt a feeling of tightness in the throat and large gourmes appeared on my skin,” he told our colleagues from HLN on Wednesday.
“Yesterday morning, around 10 a.m., I was trimming hedges in the Clemenshoek in Reet, with a colleague,” says Johan Vanhille. “I must have hit the nest with my hedge trimmer. They then started attacking me violently. I was stung twice in the head, three times in the elbow and once in the forearm”.
Johan and his colleague immediately understood the seriousness of the situation. “I suddenly felt very itchy all over. I had a feeling of tightness in my throat and my head became very hot. I then sat on the floor for a while. My colleague immediately called my boss and the ambulance, which took me to the hospital. Once there, I noticed that I had big gourds on my arms and legs. I was often stung by bees and wasps, but nothing serious. This time it was different.”
“Doctors really took the problem seriously. They gave me different kinds of medicine and gave me adrenaline. I stayed in the hospital for several hours, under surveillance, before I could go home. These beasts really should not be underestimated, many people have already died because of their bites.”
