From the Atlantic waters near Ireland down to the Mediterranean, European seas are experiencing an alarming temperature surge, according to a scientific study published on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Researchers from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) collective found that human-induced climate change is the primary driver behind this extreme overheating.
Alarming Temperature Surge Across European Seas Linked to Climate Change
Thomas Frölicher of the University of Bern, one of the study’s authors, stated that their research clearly shows this rise is due to climate change, particularly the continued burning of fossil fuels.
By combining observation data with climate models to compare current temperatures against a hypothetical world without human-caused warming, the WWA researchers calculated that climate change added approximately 2°C to Mediterranean temperatures this summer. It also added 1.4°C in the Bay of Biscay and Iberian Peninsula region, and 1.3°C in the Celtic region covering Ireland and western Great Britain. In certain Mediterranean zones, temperatures spiked up to 6°C above normal.
Unprecedented Geographic Expansion of Marine Heatwaves
The extreme temperatures have driven a massive geographic expansion of marine heatwaves across European waters. During the 14 hottest days of 2026, temperature anomalies reached 3.1°C in the western Mediterranean and 2.6°C in the eastern Mediterranean, compared to 1.5°C in the Bay of Biscay and Iberian region and 1.2°C in the Celtic region.

Marine heatwaves now envelop vast percentages of these maritime zones:
- Bay of Biscay and Iberian Coast: 90% of the zone is affected, compared to an estimated 40% in a world without a 1.4°C global temperature increase.
- Western Mediterranean: 80% of the area is impacted, compared to 40% under a cooler, unheated climate scenario.
- Eastern Mediterranean: Nearly 70% of the zone suffers from marine heatwaves, compared to just 9% in a cooler climate.
Researchers noted that such widespread events would have been extremely rare without global warming. The broader oceanic context shows that in July 2026, global oceans reached record heat for the second month, according to the European observatory Copernicus, with the phenomenon hitting Europe particularly hard.
Severe Consequences for Marine Life and Coastal Ecosystems
The overheating of European waters carries severe consequences for marine ecosystems. Scientists warn that the elevated temperatures can cause mass mortality among corals, sponges, and algae, disrupt marine food chains, and reduce populations of seabirds and marine mammals. These ecological disruptions also translate directly into economic fallout for fishing, aquaculture, and tourism industries.

Furthermore, warmer seas elevate both the temperature and humidity of coastal air, intensifying nighttime temperatures and atmospheric heat stress. Claire Bergin of Maynooth University in Ireland noted that while warmer waters might seem pleasant for swimming in cooler countries, the consequences for marine life are deeply concerning.
Looking ahead, the study warns that if humanity fails to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the planet warms by 2.8°C by 2100, future events similar to those seen in 2026 would be an additional 1.3°C to 1.9°C warmer. Catherine Gregory of the University of Bern cautioned that under such a trajectory, marine heatwaves could strike European seas every single year and become the new normal.
