Artificial intelligence models are trained in data centers, on servers that consume large amounts of electricity. Since this electricity is not entirely carbon-free, the driving and use of these models emits CO2, the main greenhouse gas.

But the exact climate impact of AI is not known with certainty. And for good reason, the publication of ChatGPT at the end of November 2022 triggered a race for AI, which is leading tech giants and start-ups in the sector to exercise great discretion over their models.
