The Directorate of Youth and Sports revealed the legal status of one of the Alexandria clubs, which witnessed the suffocation of about 56 people, most of them young swimmers, due to the leakage of chlorine inside the club’s swimming pool.

And the directorate said in an official statement, on Friday, that the club, the place of the incident – referred to as the academy – is not subject to the Ministry of Youth and Sports or the Directorate of Youth and Sports in Alexandria at the present time, as a previous license was issued for the academy located in the Sporting area from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and its work ended on the date “9/7/2022”.

The directorate explained that the previous license was not renewed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports again because the swimming pool water did not conform to the environmental and health specifications, as well as the requirements of civil protection and the requirements of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

She added that immediately after the accident, the Minister of Youth and Sports directed the formation of a committee from the Directorate to find out the course of the incident and its consequences.

She pointed out that the governor of Alexandria ordered the formation of a committee consisting of the governorate and the Sharq district, in coordination with the Directorate of Health Affairs, to discuss the accident, find out the causes of suffocation, and withdraw samples from the swimming pool water for chemical examination of the levels of gases present, measure the degree of alkalinity, and all necessary tests.

The Directorate of Youth and Sports in Alexandria confirmed that all players were discharged from the hospital after receiving the necessary first aid and that they were all in good condition.

The investigation authorities also decided to summon the officials and those in charge of the swimming pool, in addition to asking the injured, as well as requesting medical reports from the university hospital to determine the nature of the injuries, and the investigation authorities also requested the speedy conduct of investigations by the concerned authorities about the incident.
