(CNN) — French President Emmanuel Macron called for a ceasefire in Gaza, describing it as “the only solution” to the war between Israel and Hamas.
Speaking to the BBC from the Elysee Palace on Friday, Macron said that while Israel has the right to “protect itself and respond” in the wake of the October 7 attacks carried out by Hamas, Israel must “adhere to the rules of war.” International law and international humanitarian law.
He added that he hoped other world leaders would join his call for a ceasefire, and continued: “We share the pain and we share the desire to get rid of terrorism, and we know what terrorism means in France, but I believe there is no justification for attacking civilians.”
