The tierçons that rest in the shadows of the cellars of the Domaine de Grollet, the gathering place of LOUIS XIII’s legacy, are true wonders in their own right. Together they hold a lovingly guarded collection of eaux-de-vie, precious memories from the Cognac Grande Champagne region, from which LOUIS XIII Cognac is ultimately created.

Each tierçon is crafted from French oak that has been aged for over 100 years. They are said to have their own spirit that speaks to the eaux-de-vie. Each acorn planted is a promise of the gift of time and nature: thinking of the centuries to come, LOUIS XIII creates wonderful prospects for future generations.

In the dark and seemingly undisturbed, the eaux-de-vie undergo an almost magical transformation in the casks. You get a moving, intense color with fascinating mahogany tones that will shine impressively once they are brought to light one day. The unveiling of a RARE CASK is a unique moment in the life of a LOUIS XIII cellar master, as a single lifetime is not always long enough to experience such a spontaneous, rare event.

The meticulous tasting of the eaux-de-vie during their aging, as part of the endless transmission of know-how, is part of a cellar master’s lifelong task of passing on the legacy of LOUIS XIII. RARE CASK 43.8 was discovered in 2004 by Cellar Master Pierrette Trichet and was followed in 2009 by the discovery of RARE CASK 42.6 by Baptiste Loiseau and Pierrette Trichet, who were working together at the time. Now, for the third time in history, in an unexpected departure from normal timing, a revelation comes with the discovery of RARE CASK 42.1 by Baptiste Loiseau.

Inexplicably and unexpectedly, a single Tierçon has just unveiled its unique, exceptional aromatic profile, giving LOUIS XIII Cognac a distinct, never-before-seen expression with an unexpected alcohol content of 42.1%.

Drawing inspiration from the unknown and the unusual, Baptiste Loiseau seizes the opportunities that time can give and artfully crafts the wonders of the future.

It takes a special sensitivity to hear the whispers of nature in the midst of all the silence. Baptiste Loiseau listens attentively to the exchanges inside the tierçon between the centenary oak and the eaux-de-vie, cultivating the expression of the RARE CASK 42.1 and letting his instinct decide when the right moment has come for this wonder in all its splendour can be enjoyed.

10 years later, in March 2023, RARE CASK 42.1 is set to be presented to the world. The Tierçon will fill a limited run of just over 775 decanters specially crafted by Baccarat in black crystal glass. The design of each decanter is a spectacular demonstration of the synergy of art and know-how: achieving a perfect, jewel-like black finish requires incredible talent and extreme care. For a brief moment, a rapid collaboration of 20 master craftsmen is required in a race against time to complete over 50 precise steps before the molten material hardens and forms a radiant work of art. Finally, the resulting decanter is adorned with a gold and rhodium-plated neck and ring with fine engraving depicting France’s quatrefoil pattern, a nod to the Fleur-de-Lys.

RARE CASK 42.1 is the first edition presented with a serving ritual set. The black crystal glass decanter is complemented by crystal glasses decorated with black quatrefoils and a serving pipette with a black medallion.
