Cognizant Forms OpenAI Group With 25,000 Staff

IT services provider Cognizant has formed an OpenAI Frontier Capability Group comprising more than 25,000 staff to deploy Codex and ChatGPT for enterprise clients, focusing on software engineering, cloud migration, and customer service automation, PRNewswire reported on Thursday. The move arrives just 11 days after the firm committed 18,000 employees to Google’s competing Gemini platform.

Building an OpenAI Frontier Capability Group

The newly formed OpenAI Frontier Capability Group targets three core operational pillars: writing code via Codex, migrating legacy mainframe systems to cloud environments, and deploying AI agents for sales and customer service workflows. According to Cognizant, the primary bottleneck holding back enterprise adoption is a shortage of qualified builders who can integrate large language models into existing legacy infrastructure, rather than a lack of raw model access.

Internal upskilling efforts are already underway to meet these demands. More than 21,000 Cognizant professionals have collectively earned over 40,000 OpenAI training badges. This mirrors OpenAI’s own commercial strategy of building out direct deployment capacity, which included launching an internal deployment division in May and acquiring Northslope in July.

Hedging Enterprise Bets Across Competing Large Language Models

Cognizant is actively avoiding single-vendor lock-in by diversifying its enterprise AI delivery workforce. Just 11 days prior to the OpenAI announcement, the IT services firm mobilized an 18,000-strong team centered on Google’s Gemini models. This dual-track deployment strategy highlights how major IT integrators are positioning themselves to support whichever foundational model architecture clients prefer, balancing Google’s ecosystem against OpenAI’s developer tooling.

“We are committing more than 25,000 of our people to bring that change inside our clients’ businesses,” said Cognizant chief executive Ravi Kumar S. The operational framework is already producing measurable performance metrics in production environments. Cognizant reported building a proprietary AI assistant for a global pharmaceutical manufacturer that successfully processed over 5 million customer interactions while reducing content generation latency by 60%.

Expanding Industry Partnerships

The large-scale staff mobilization builds upon an existing commercial agreement established in April, when OpenAI recruited both Cognizant and CGI to help scale Codex integration across Fortune 500 enterprises. By pairing massive engineering headcounts with targeted cloud migration tooling, Cognizant aims to accelerate the transition of mission-critical business logic away from aging on-premise hardware.
