The Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Health are doing epidemiological follow-up on a man who is a possible carrier of monkeypox. The individual, from Spain, was on tourism for several days in Colombia, as revealed by W Radio.

On the other hand, at the moment 200 cases have been confirmed around the world, according to a senior official of the World Health Organization (WHO).

However, the WHO gave a piece of calm on the subject saying that the transmission of smallpox from person to person “can be stopped in non-endemic countries”.

The National Institute of Health in Colombia had delivered a piece of calm in the face of the international alert for the current outbreak of monkeypox in countries such as Spain and the United Kingdom.

The entity clarified that monkeypox is not a new virus in the world, so the last confirmed case in the Americas was in the United States in 2003.

As illustrated by the health authority, this virus is of the POX type, that is, it can be transmitted by animals such as monkeys, where the virus in question comes from, whose initial cases were imported from regions of Africa.

He explained that it is a kind of virus that is similar to chicken pox in humans and produces vesicles and respiratory signs in animals that in contact with humans can end up being infected. The main difference with chicken pox is the presentation of swollen glands in many parts of the body.

However, the INS assured that when the virus reaches organs of the human body such as the brain or lungs it can cause death, but it is more likely that one death will occur in a thousand cases than in a few cases. Therefore, early detection is important to break a chain of transmission.

Finally, he called for good sense and said that a virus like measles is a hundred times more likely and more serious, because it is highly contagious.
