Colombia is not a favourite, but its technical director, Nelson Abadía, stated on the eve of their crucial duel against Jamaica, that they aspire to go “well, far” in the Women’s World Cup.

Abadía assured that his team is prepared to face the solid defensive scheme that allowed Jamaica to reach the round of 16 without conceding a single goal.

“We are not favorites but we want to reach the very, very final stages of the tournament,” Abadía said at a press conference the day before the game, on Tuesday at 08:00 GMT, which will define the pass to the quarterfinals.

The winner will face the winner of Monday’s game between England and Nigeria on Saturday.

However, Abadía admitted that “we have to be more competitive than we have been” in the group stage of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Colombia reached the round of 16 after beating South Korea (2-0) and favorites Germany (2-1), before losing to newcomers Morocco (1-0).

But against Jamaica it will be a particular duel due to the closed defense of the ‘Reggae Girlz’, who left their goal at zero against France and Brazil. But at the same time they managed only one goal, against debutant Haiti, on a set piece.

“The lack of goals is not a concern for us, we play against good teams. France and Brazil are two of the best teams, we should have lost by six or seven goals, ”said Jamaican coach Lorne Donaldson, when asked about the absence of goals directed by him.

However, he acknowledged that against Colombia they will have to score because “one of the two is going to be left out.”

Abadía assured that “the individual and collective imbalance is going to be essential to counteract all of Jamaica’s strength in its defensive sector, without neglecting the counterattack in which they are also very strong.”

In this regard, Jamaican defender Deneisha Blackwood assured that in Tuesday’s game “we are going to show the world what we can do not only defensively, but also offensively.”

The “Powerpuff Girls” of Colombia will have their winger Manuela Vanegas dropped, suspended for accumulating yellow cards, which opened the door for the youthful Ana María Guzmán, 18 years old.

Guzmán said she was excited to play alongside Linda Caicedo, the Colombian women’s soccer star with whom she has shared youth teams since they were both 12 years old.

“Being with Linda is very special, we are convinced that being on the pitch is giving yourself completely, giving your spirit and soul for this shirt,” said the full-back.
