After several changes and delays in the dates, Martha Sepulveda received euthanasia this Saturday at the IPS Incodol, Colombian Institute of Pain, in Medellín, a procedure she was seeking after suffering deterioration in her health and quality of life due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) you suffer from.
Martha’s euthanasia, initially scheduled for October 10, would be the first in the country to be applied to a person with a non-terminal illness. But nevertheless, after knowing his case, there were several obstacles and guardianships that postponed the date for more than three months.
“I’m good luck, I have good luck. And, as I told you, I am calmer since the procedure was authorized: I laugh more, I sleep more calmly. Yes, I enjoy it (the beer), of course. It’s that with this heat, how can a beer not taste good to me, right (…) Well, let me tell you why, right, and the answer is the same: because I’m suffering, because I believe in a God who doesn’t want to see me like that. In fact, for me this is allowing God, that’s how I see it, if he wants me, he doesn’t want to see me in this condition, ”Martha said at the time.
In the following days, various reactions began to be published and one of the first was that of the Catholic Church, which asked Martha to desist from her decision, as expressed by Monsignor Francisco Ceballos, bishop of the Diocese of Riohacha and president of the Department of Promotion and Defense. of the Life of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia.
According to our deep Christian convictions, death cannot be the therapeutic answer to pain and suffering in any case. Death caused by suicide or euthanasia is not compatible with our interpretation of the dignity of human life, ”argued the church.
Then, on October 9, Incodol canceled the procedure after analyzing the case a second time and issuing a different conclusion.
“The termination criterion is not met, as had been considered in the first committee.”
And there began a whole legal process that included guardianships and responses from judges until Incodol contacted her again to tell Martha that the procedure would indeed be done.
