The incidence of cancer is expected to increase by 77 percent, meaning that the number will rise to more than 35 million cases in 2050, according to the World Health Organization’s cancer control agency. Disturbing and frightening news! This number is global, but in the Middle East, the number is expected to double to 1.57 million infections by 2045. What about Lebanon?

Former Chairman of the Parliamentary Health Committee, Dr. Assem Araji, believes that the situation in Lebanon is completely unhealthy due to the absence of oversight. The incidence of cancer has increased significantly in recent years as a result of water and food pollution, especially food, due to the multiplicity of sources and the lack of control, especially on preservatives.

Araji expects, via the MTV website, that the situation will be very difficult in the coming years and that the number of cancer cases will increase significantly. It is a matter of concern, as we are ultimately in Lebanon, where there is no medicine or medical care for those who do not have money. Knowing that cancer treatment is expensive and often unavailable… ask those who are in pain!

The reasons are many and varied. In addition to pollution, it is necessary to highlight the significant increase in smoking rates in all its forms, which leads to an increase in cancer diseases, especially lung cancer. In addition to the phenomenon of burning tires, which is also increasing due to the quest to obtain the copper contained within them. Araji gives an example when he says: “In the central Bekaa region, where the Litani River passes, which contains all cancer causes, including chemicals, industrial materials, and sewage, there is no protection for the villages located on its banks. Therefore, the problem in these areas is frightening and the number of infections is large.”

So how do we protect ourselves?

Araji answers: “In general, the state is supposed to work to reduce pollution in its forms – water, air, industrial and environmental – in the country. In addition to monitoring factories and their compliance with environmental controls.” On the personal level, he says: “You must avoid smoking and pay attention to your physical health by adhering to healthy foods, knowing their sources, losing weight, reducing sugary foods, exercising daily, and alleviating stress.”
