One blow of enormous proportions involving iPhones managed to reach thousands of people in Will. The company Kourosh Company — which spearheaded heavy marketing by offering the Apple device at half the price — simply disappeared from the map and never shipped the products purchased by consumers.

Having acquired many clients through advertisements starring personalities such as the goalkeeper of the national football team Alireza Beiranvand, the company led by businessman Amir Hossein Sharifan may have received the equivalent of US$35 million with fraud, according to the local press.

According to Financial Times, Sharifan left Iran several months ago, but was located by police at an undisclosed address and extradited by Interpol. In an interview with a YouTube channel recently, he reportedly said that he owes “only” $2.7 million to his clients.

iPhones are considered exclusive items in Iran, as they are not officially sold by Apple in the country due to sanctions applied by the United States. Even so, around US$1 billion worth of devices were imported into the country in the last ten months, which are normally sold in unofficial stores.

This lack of formality opens the door to frauds like Kourosh’s, which are further enhanced by corruption in the country. According to the FTmany question how a three-year-old company could easily advertise a fraudulent product and obtain a certificate of trust for online sales.
