PROTECTION of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) as a whole must be immediately realized and become the attention of all parties as part of the state’s efforts to protect every citizen.
“The number of PMI who work illegally in other countries is still relatively high, immediate and comprehensive steps to protect them must be of concern to stakeholders at the central and regional levels,” said Deputy Chair of the Indonesian MPR, Lestari Moerdijat in a written statement, Tuesday (16/ 4).
Records from the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) in 2023 reveal that there will be at least 9 million Indonesian citizens (WNI) who are Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) or Indonesian Migrant Workers (TKl) abroad.
However, only 4.68 million TKI work according to the correct or legal channels. Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia data for 2023 recorded PMI remittances reaching USD 14.22 billion.
According to Lestari, who is the Deputy Chair of the Indonesian MPR, coordinator for the Absorption of Community and Regional Aspirations, BP2MI’s records must be the basis for various efforts to improve PMI protection governance.
Rerie, Lestari’s nickname, believes that Indonesian citizens should not work abroad illegally, which is full of rule violations, resulting in minimal protection.
According to Rerie, who is also a legislator from Electoral District II, Central Java, various efforts to reduce the number of illegal PMIs, such as massive outreach, improving the skills of prospective workers and a number of policies to increase PMI protection, must be consistently implemented.
The member of the NasDem Party High Council really hopes that comprehensive efforts to protect PMI can be realized soon, amidst global economic conditions that present various challenges. (Z-6)
