concert #32: beck @ arena | 06/21/2022

the open-air concert by “beck” on the arena grounds was not only inspiring from beginning to end, but also from start to finish!

“beck” was always on my “once in my life see live list” and when i was finally able to tick this off after the primavera sound festival in barcelona, i knew that seeing it live once is unfortunately not enough. Luckily, a short time later there was also a date in Vienna on his tour schedule and I knew that I had to go there. said and done. i was there much too early, but i had a precise vision of where i wanted to be at this concert so that i could enjoy the concert in such a way that it corresponded to my imagination. so i sat on the ground in the dusty meadow for over an hour so as not to lose my place and also shooed away all the people who might be able to block my view. yes, this concert was almost sacred to me and nothing was more important to me than the perfect view of “beck”.

I didn’t have too much of a problem with the fact that his support act canceled at short notice. I just wanted to see “beck” anyway. when, surprisingly, the main act of the evening appeared on stage much earlier and was only armed with an acoustic guitar, i was amazed: “beck” said he was simply his own support act today. and everything that followed i can’t really put into words: by the third song at the latest, a cover of “everybody’s got to learn sometime” i wanted to start crying at the unbelievable concert beauty.

of course, the acoustic set didn’t last forever, at some point his band came on stage and we were not only delighted with a fuller sound, but also with an incredibly beautiful light show. as the fourth song, my favorite song “dreams” rang out from the speakers and i was close to tears again because of the huge happiness i felt. i knew from his performance in barcelona that i would love everything about his show in vienna, but he simply topped himself many times over. how can such an inconspicuous person as beck put on such a good show? in his white suit he posed, animated and danced, and even carried away the fiercest viennese.

his setlist was not only varied and entertaining, it was a real journey through time. plus his rousing announcements – no wonder that I couldn’t contain my enthusiasm anymore. in between he threw his all-time hit “loser” at us before he drove me crazy with other favorite songs.

for the encore block i suspect a rather soft ending.. i don’t even know anymore why. Anyway, that was completely wrong! “beck” changed his outfit, brought even worse guitars onto the stage, encouraged people to clap and sing along and – best of all – he gave us the most beautiful shower of confetti vienna has ever seen! i really cried with joy at the end – it was one of the best concerts i have ever been able to attend!
