Construction tycoon Stumpf is offering 1 billion euros for Signa’s real estate package

The well-known developer and investor is said to have offered 1 billion euros for Signa Prime properties – specifically for the “Golden Quarter”, the Hotel Park Hyatt Vienna and the Constitutional Court building in downtown Vienna as well as for the Tyrol department store in Innsbruck.

Signa Prime currently has the highest outstanding invoices: so far, creditors have registered claims totaling 12.8 billion euros. The insolvency administrator recognized almost 6 billion euros of this.

“I’ll buy your tower”

With a fortune estimated at 7.5 billion euros, Georg Stumpf is considered the second richest Austrian behind Mark Mateschitz. Stumpf followed in his father’s footsteps and, as a building contractor, built the Millenium Tower and subsequently the Millenium City in Vienna. The irony of the publicity-shy billionaire Stumpf’s offer: Signa founder Rene Benko is said to have marched into Stumpf’s office years ago with the words “I’ll buy your tower.” Back then, the busy Benko didn’t lack the necessary self-confidence, but he did lack the necessary capital. Now Stumpf could take over top properties from the Signa Group.
