The political party Construye, from Ecuador, announced this Saturday that Andrea González Náder will be its new presidential candidate, replacing Fernando Villavicencio, who was shot dead last Wednesday by suspected hitmen at the exit of an electoral rally.
“The Construye Movement confirms Andrea González as presidential candidate. Andrea will guarantee the legacy of Fernando Villavicencio and millions of Ecuadorians will accompany her in this purpose,” the political bloc wrote on their social networks.
Until now, González Náder held the candidacy for vice president in the binomial headed by the murdered politician.
If the National Electoral Council (CNE) accepts this change, González Náder would participate this Sunday in the debate that the presidential candidates will hold a week after the vote.
The block’s vice-presidential candidate will be announced in the next few hours and will be chosen from among the most trusted people in Villavicencio.
Villavicencio, 59 years old and candidate for the Presidency for the Construye movement, was shot at as soon as he was getting into a van at the exit of a rally held in the Anderson College auditorium, located on Gaspar de Villarroel avenue in the Ecuadorian capital.
Meanwhile, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, the murder suspects have already been arrested.
He specified that six people, all of Colombian nationality, were arrested during raids carried out in the Conocoto and San Bartolo sectors, in Quito.
For his part, the country’s president, Guillermo Lasso, reported that he had requested help from the FBI for the investigation.
