A Laval resident who had his vehicle stolen last February must now contest a ticket he allegedly received after the thieves left his car on the streets of Montreal.

“This $90 infraction could have saved me around $45,000 in claims,” denounces Yannick Paquette.

The victim regrets that city employees did not contact him when they found his car.

“A week exactly after February 9, there was a ticket on the Rav4, I now know exactly where it was, but I haven’t heard anything,” the man complains in an interview on LCN.

Moreover, Mr. Paquette was informed that thieves have the habit of leaving vehicles sleeping in the streets for a few days to ensure that they do not have a GPS tracking device.

The criminals then take the cars to the port of Montreal and ship them to other countries.

“So he had found my car, no one told me, no one saw it in time,” he said desperately.

According to him, the ticket could have allowed him to find his vehicle if communication had been adequate with the City of Montreal.

Response from the City of Montreal

To add to his unfortunate situation, Mr. Paquette must now go to Montreal on March 26 to contest the infraction report.

“What is absurd about this is that I was given a ticket, that it was sent to me, that I contest it and that I have to drive 5 hours round trip to go and debate in front of a judge,” he explains.

Contacted by TVA Nouvelles, the City of Montreal responded by email that the victim could communicate in advance with the prosecutor and by presenting the evidence, it would be possible for the prosecution to be dropped.

However, Mr. Paquette claims to have already taken these steps and will still have to appear in municipal court next March.
