Controversial Brussels Project: Negative Public Opinion vs Favorable Consultation Commission, Ecological Concerns, and Inaccessible Housing

At the end of the public inquiry, some 80 people had expressed a negative opinion on the project. But the consultation commission delivered a favorable opinion. This time, the request checks all the RRU boxes. For Hubert Monet, however, this is nonsense. “It makes no sense at an ecological level firstly since we are going to cut down these hundred-year-old trees and on the other hand, the City of Brussels tells us that we must protect green spaces, we must promote them and so she’s going to replant trees elsewhere. But before you have trees like that, well, it takes 100 years.”

Another point raised by opponents of the project: these will be high-end apartments, inaccessible for a majority of Brussels residents. This is not the type of housing that the region needs.

Neither the City of Brussels nor the owner responded to our request for an interview.
