Controversial Catalan Amnesty: Latest Updates and Analysis

2023-12-12 22:57:35

The controversial plan for an amnesty for Catalan separatists has cleared another hurdle in the Spanish parliament. The deputies of the lower house in Madrid decided yesterday with 178 votes to 172 that the draft law introduced by the left-wing government should be admitted for discussion. The Senate board had previously given the first green light in November.

It is expected that it will take several months for the “Law for institutional, political and social normalization in Catalonia” to be adopted. The Senate will deal with it next. The conservative People’s Party PP led by opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo has a majority of seats there. Feijoo described the planned amnesty at the debate as a “national disgrace and international embarrassment.”

The socialist head of government Pedro Sanchez had promised the “Catalanistas” the amnesty and other concessions in order to secure the votes of two separatist parties for his re-election in the Madrid parliament in mid-November.
