Controversial Post Office Festival: Outrage over Lavish Employee Celebration amidst Financial Struggles

Two weeks ago, we thought that La Poste was struggling to make ends meet. She had demanded substantial increases in letter postage rates, which the Price Supervisor managed to tone down a bit. Nevertheless: from 2024, sending a standard A mail envelope will cost 1 fr.20, a price which had already been increased in 2022 to 1 fr. 10 when it had risen to 1 fr. in 2004. Director General of La Poste, Roberto Cirillo spoke of “absolutely necessary” increases and affirmed that the company was going to have to “continue to tighten its belt”.

It is therefore with astonishment that our colleagues from «Argovia Today» discovered that the Yellow Giant had sent more than 46,000 invitations to its employees for an internal festival, where renowned artists (DJ Bobo, Gentleman, Soolking, Francine Jordi, Stefanie Heinzmann) will perform. This party, scheduled for the end of August, should cost a total of around 3 million. “But this budget is not taken from tax money,” Nathalie Dérobert told Argovia Today. The spokeswoman for the Post Office indicated that a kitty fed by each sector of the company was intended to finance this kind of internal event. She also stresses that it is important to be able to organize a party to thank the employees for their work and their commitment.

Nevertheless, the sum involved is causing a stir, especially among politicians. Among them, the Socialist National Councilor Yvonne Feri judges that this festival is in contradiction with the announced economy measures, while admitting that it is necessary to maintain a good relationship with the employees. Less nuanced, SVP National Councilor Benjamin Giezendanner believes that the budget for this holiday is an “affront” to employees, who are always asked to make more efforts to achieve planned savings.
