Following the Sanda Dia case, a student who died during his baptism in 2018 at the University of Louvain, the members of the student circle were sentenced to community service. A sentence deemed too lenient by a Flemish youtubeur. In a video, he revealed the names, photos and professions of several defendants.

In his video, the Flemish YouTuber broadcasts the names, photos and various information concerning 4 members of the Reuzegom student circle and their relatives. The video is viewed hundreds of thousands of times. Its author considers the sentence pronounced in the Sanda Dia case too lenient.

“I find this very serious. This case is already dramatic in itself. This person knows nothing about the file, has never come to attend a session and has probably not read the court’s justifications on the sentences. This nobody, behind his computer, disseminates erroneous information and shows people who have nothing to do with this file. I find this very regrettable. It does not add anything to the debate. On the contrary, it poisons it”reacts Walter Damen, lawyer for a member of the student circle “Reuzegom”.

As of Wednesday evening, the video is removed. Acid is banned from posting on YouTube for a week. “This video has been removed due to a violation of YouTube’s harassment and offensive content policy”estimated the communication of YouTube.

On May 26, the Antwerp Court of Appeal acquitted the 18 defendants in connection with the death of Sanda Dia. They are sentenced to between 200 and 300 hours of community service and 400 euros in damages. Some call the verdict too lenient. Others believe that citizens enjoy privileges before the courts.

“Everyone can have an opinion and express it. But then you have to see the reality. If you want to freely express an opinion, a notion that I understand very well and that I defend with conviction, you have to make sure that you are well informed. And the broadcast of this video proves the opposite”continues Walter Damen, lawyer for a member of the student circle “Reuzegom”.

The youtubeur risks legal proceedings for having disseminated erroneous information. On Sunday, a demonstration will be held in Brussels. She wants to express the feeling of injustice felt in the context of this case.
