Muslim citizens celebrate, until Saturday, the most important holiday of their faith: Aïd el-Kébir. This moment of sharing and faith commemorates, for the believer, the sacrifice that Allah demanded of Abraham to test his faith. As the latter was about to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, the angel Gabriel intervened and replaced him with a ram. Since then, Muslims sacrifice an animal, usually a sheep, when it comes time for Eid and its festivities.
Belgian-Belgian Kafkaesque peculiarity: in Flanders and Wallonia, this ritual slaughter can no longer take place without prior stunning of the animal. Out of concern for animal welfare – it is proven that an unstunned sheep suffers excruciatingly before death – the two regions voted in this direction in 2019, without the slightest clash.
Brussels, if many of its deputies, especially from the left and center-left (PS, PTB and Ecolo, as well as Les Engagés) had not shamefully sat down on science, being afraid of cutting themselves off from an important contingent of voices (especially Muslims, Jews, too), should have done the same a year ago. Except that with 42 votes for, 38 votes against and 8 abstentions, the Brussels Parliament decided, last June, to reject the proposal for an ordinance which had been tabled by Défi, Groen and the Open VLD, aimed at prohibiting the slaughter without stunning. The PS had overwhelmingly voted in favor of maintaining the current situation, as did the PTB. The elected officials Ecolo and Les Engagés, each deputy of whom had the freedom to vote (no party instructions), had also leaned more towards the pursuit of slaughter without stunning.

That day, the majority of the deputies of the Brussels Parliament raised their middle fingers in the air to science and the animal condition, by, whatever they say, community-electionist compromise. The result: sheep are slaughtered today, completely legally and without stunning, in the capital of Europe. Where we are sworn, heart on hand, that the communitarian vote is a chimera…
As much as we wanted to say “Aid Mabrouk” to Muslims, it seems useful not to forget this political failure with a sense of history.
