It will therefore have cost 15.8 billion dollars to the American authorities to save the two banks that went bankrupt in mid-March and then sold to buyers, Signature Bank and Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). This is the amount that must be returned to the fund intended to guarantee bank deposits in the United States, announced Thursday evening the government agency which manages this instrument, the FDIC. Banks with more than 50 billion dollars in assets will have to assume 95% of this 15.8 billion, while very small ones will not have to contribute.
