Cousins have gold between their hands. Their sales have exploded

An 84-year-old family company located in the middle of Mors is on a growth adventure that can make most business owners green with envy.

In just two years, the turnover in the cousins Jakob and Holger Pedersen’s company, Mollerup Mølle, has grown by over DKK 1 billion.

And the bottom line can be counted in millions of kroner.

Sales in wild growth

Mollerup Mølle trades in grain and animal feed, among other things, and is owned by the third generation, Jakob and Holger Pedersen, who are also both directors.

They have just put their signature on a new annual report, which shows that Mollerup Mølle had a turnover of DKK 2.7 billion last year. 500 million kroner more than the previous year.

And a doubling in just three years.

– This is an increase in both kroner and volume, because we have increased our market share in an otherwise highly competitive market, says Søren Rathcke, chairman of the board of Mollerup Mølle.

The bottom line shows a result of DKK 18 million against DKK 35.3 million the previous year.

– It is a satisfactory result. It is the third best in the mill’s history, but the decline reflects both the increased interest rate and generally higher operating costs, says Søren Rathcke.

Large new buildings

During the year, Mollerup Mølle received record amounts of crops. In order to be able to handle it all, the family company has taken four newly built halls into use at the Port of Aalborg.

– The last two were not finished until harvest in the summer of 2023, and it was actually planned that they should be rented out for other purposes. But we needed them ourselves, explains Søren Rathcke.

The new warehouses at the port in Aalborg provide better access to efficient infrastructure by ship, rail and road, which, according to Søren Rathcke, is crucial for Mollerup Mølle’s business.

It increases the Mors company’s competitiveness in a larger geographical area that extends beyond the borders of both North Jutland and Denmark.

Restructuring of production

Over recent years, Mollerup Mølle has also increased its activities on Zealand and Lolland-Falster.

In addition, some malted barley is sold to Danish and foreign malthouses. And then Mollerup Mølle has rearranged its feed production, so that it now produces far more cattle feed than before.

– Our feed production has so far been concentrated on pig feed, but with a falling pig production at home, we have chosen to invest more in cattle feed, and it has been a success. Our feed factories run 24 hours a day all week, says Søren Rathcke.

Mollerup Mølle has also started to establish a drying plant at the four newly built halls at Aalborg Harbour.

The drying plant will have a capacity of 140 tonnes per hour and must be ready for the harvest later this year.

In the current financial year, Mollerup Mølle expects revenue and bottom line to be roughly at the same level.
