It is undeniable that Marvel Studios has entered the history of world cinema with the entire cinematic universe of heroes created since the release of Iron Man 1, back in 2008. 15 years have passed and the company seems to be facing a decline after its peak.

The website Visual Capitalist released an infographic that helps show the entire trajectory and current situation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in terms of box office and critics. The data helps to better understand what happened to the studio’s productions.

The infographic was separated by phases and releases of the MCU and the site only took feature films into consideration, but it provides a complete overview of the current situation of productions. See the graph below, or click here to access the expanded version.

As the infographic pointed out, The Avengers (2012) was the MCU’s first big success, in addition to being the first film in the franchise to surpass US$1 billion at the box office. The supergroup’s films were Marvel’s most successful.

After the success of the first Avengers film, which ended Phase 1, other films featuring isolated heroes also did very well, as was the case with Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther and Captain Marvel, which grossed a lot at the box office.

Soon after came Marvel’s peak in theaters with Avengers: Endgame. The film recorded the highest-grossing film in the studio’s history, grossing US$2.79 billion. After that, only the Spider-Man films managed to stand out.

The latest Marvel films have not been very well received by the public, with the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Marvels, the most recent production, had the worst performance of the entire franchise in the United States, with US$46 million grossed. in the first three days.

However, the public is already tired of films like The Eternals, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Thor: Love and Thunder. Marvel was also the target of criticism and began to have below average films on the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator from Phase 4 onwards.

Many point out that the superhero film market is saturated. Others indicate that the paths followed by Marvel left the production scripts very shallow and even the quality of the special effects fell, which alienated fans of the feature films.

And do you believe that Marvel will be able to recover the quality of its productions and return to its peak period? Tell us in the comments below!
