Crisis in Ede: Hostage Situation Unfolds in Dutch Town

Five people were reportedly taken hostage in a cafe in the Dutch town of Ede near Utrecht on Saturday. The hostage taker claims to be in possession of explosive devices. This was confirmed by a community spokesman. A large police presence cordoned off the area in the center of the city, Dutch media reported. According to police, around 150 apartments were evacuated due to the threat.

At the same time, the police called on people to avoid the center of the city, which is not far from Arnhem in the province of Gelderland. Train services in the affected area were suspended.

According to the Dutch newspaper “De Telegraaf”, the authorities did not want to confirm whether the police had contact with the hostage takers. According to the report, investigators are currently assuming a hostage taker. A police spokesman also did not want to say anything regarding possible explosives. The Gelderland police stated that there was no evidence of a terrorist motive.
