JERUSALEM / DOHA ∙ 67 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Rafah, southern Gaza, to free 2 hostages. Many people were seriously injured. 3 mosques and 14 houses were destroyed by Israeli warplanes. Hamas said the death toll would be over 100.

Fernando Simon Marman (60) and Luis Hare (70), who also have Argentine citizenship, were freed in the early morning raid. They were among the 250 people kidnapped by Hamas on October 7.

Israel is planning more attacks on Rafah, the last stronghold of Hamas. The military operation has created a lot of concern here, where around 14 lakh people have taken shelter.

US President Joe Biden has warned Israel not to attack Rafah without a clear plan and without ensuring the safety of the people. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the fact that 132 people are yet to be freed justifies Israel’s military action.
