West Bank: Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Ishtayyah’s government has resigned. Ishtayyah heads the Palestinian Authority government, which controls the occupied West Bank. The resignation was submitted to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The action is in protest of the Israeli attacks in Gaza and the ongoing atrocities in the West Bank.

Mohammad Ishtaiya himself released the resignation information. He said the government decided to resign in the context of the unprecedented actions in the West Bank and Jerusalem, the war, genocide and famine in the Gaza Strip. A new government-political formation will be challenging given the new reality in Gaza. It requires the general consent of the Palestinian people. Muhammad Ishtayyah added that Palestine should be based on authority over the land and Palestinian unity.

It was reported that Mahmoud Abbas was being removed to form a new government as soon as the Israeli offensive on Gaza ended. The reconstruction of Gaza will be the primary concern of the new government. Egypt media ‘Asharqul Awsath’ reported that instead of political leaders, a group of experts in various fields will be formed.

Muhammad Ishtaiya had earlier announced that he would resign if there was a move to form a new government. It is reported that Mahmoud Abbas may invite Palestinian Investment Fund Board of Directors Chairman Mohammad Mustafa to form a new government. However, this requires the approval of various Palestinian parties. Abbas also held talks with Arab leaders including the King of Jordan in the wake of the government’s resignation.

Born in Palestine in 1954, Muhammad Mustafa has held important positions in various political and economic committees in the Arab region. He has also worked in various international financial institutions.
