Data issued by American centers active in disease control revealed an increase in the rates of norovirus infection, which is classified as the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis.

Data from the Center for Disease Control conducted last week showed that more than 12% of norovirus tests were “positive,” according to Al-Hurra American channel reported on Sunday evening.

Norovirus outbreaks are most common in late fall, winter, and early spring. It causes between 19 million and 21 million cases of infection each year, “in crowded environments, such as nursing homes, care centers and cruise ships.”

The Center for Disease Control explained that norovirus infection can spread when a person comes into direct contact with an infected person, or when he eats food or liquids contaminated with the virus, or touches contaminated surfaces.

He pointed out that there is no specific treatment for norovirus infection, and it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and to prevent the disease.
