Cristiano Ronaldo leads Manchester United to victory against Arsenal with a brace and cracks an incredible milestone

In the last league game before the final arrival of the new team manager Ralf Rangnick the Red Devils went into a duel against Arsenal with interim coach Michael Carrick in a 4-5-1 system. The formidable ex-Dortmund Jadon Sancho started on the wing, superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in the striker.

Arsenal, which recently established themselves at the top of the table with four wins from five games, wanted to further reduce the gap to Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City. Team manager Mikel Arteta relied on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the only tip in the guest appearance, the Norwegian Martin Ödegaard acted slightly behind in the attacking midfield. Bernd Leno was absent due to a groin problem.

The Gunners took the initiative from the start, pushed Manchester United deep into their own half and came up with good offensive actions. Aubameyang failed after just 40 seconds with a shot from twelve meters in the right position after Sancho allowed himself a bad pass in his own penalty area and played the ball directly into the attacker’s feet.

Arsenal remained dangerous in the attack and took the lead after a corner kick. Manchester United cleared the high ball with a head, but Mohamed Elneny brought the ball to Emile Smith Rowe, who pulled from 22 meters on the left and hit the corner, while David de Gea was on the ground and held his foot (13th) . The keeper was injured shortly before in a collision with teammate Fred. Referee Martin Atkinson initially did not give the goal, but after a few minutes decided on goal – precisely because there was no foul.

Manchester United showed a different face after falling behind, played more courageously and left the Gunners barely in possession. Shortly before half-time, the Red Devils finally managed to equalize. Sancho brought the ball from the left into the box to Fred, who passed it straight to Bruno Fernandes. From six meters the Portuguese put the ball in the right corner – his fifth goal of the season (44th).

The Red Devils took the spirit with them into the second half and turned the game around in the 52nd minute. Marcus Rashford came over the right side with great speed, moved into the penalty area and passed the ball into the center of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese took the ball directly from ten meters and turned flat into the left corner.

Arsenal, however, had the right answer and scored the equalizer just two minutes later. Thomas Partey shifted play to the right to Gabriel Martinelli, who played the ball flat in the middle. Odegaard looked for the conclusion and brought the ball flat in the left corner (54th).

As a result, it remained extremely intense – both teams kept looking for the way to go on the offensive. In the 67th minute, Sancho served Fred in the penalty area, which was cleared by Odegaard with a tackle. Atkinson let play on. The VAR switched on again, Atkinson looked at the scene again and subsequently decided on a penalty kick. Ronaldo stepped up from the point and slammed the ball into the middle of the goal for renewed leadership (70th), which the Red Devils ultimately saved over time.

The voices for the game:

Michael Carrick (Interimscoach Manchester United): “After much thought, I decided that now is the right time to leave the club. I thank all the players and especially my assistants.”

Mikel Arteta (Teammanager Arsenal FC): “If we watch the whole game, we would have deserved more. But against an opponent at this level you will be punished mercilessly.”

The tweet about the game:

Unfortunate scene …

It was noticeable that there was a lot of catching up to do

According to the British Daily Mail, Rangnick will have 100 million pounds available for potential reinforcements for the coming winter transfer window. Amadou Haidara from Leipzig – who feels comfortable in midfield – is therefore at the top of the wish list. In the game against Arsenal, however, the Red Devils’ development game in particular turned out to be in need of improvement.

When the Gunners pressed heavily, Manchester United had considerable problems opening the game from the chain. Harry Maguire, as the ball carrier, raised his arms questioningly over and over again, because there were no construction options available to him. Fred cut off too much, Scott McTominay often disappeared entirely. Manchester United would do a good builder with a sure pass – both on the six and in central defense.

The statistics: 800

The goal to make it 2-1 was Ronaldo’s 800th goal in his professional career. The attacker scored 129 times for Manchester United, five times for Sporting Lisbon, 450 times for Real Madrid, 101 times for Juventus Turin and 115 times for Portugal. In the further course of the game, Ronaldo added again and scored his 801st goal.
