The most renowned Bordeaux wines are aged in the Médoc. The Châteaux which are among the Grands Crus Classés and which nowadays sometimes cost a small fortune are worth to these wines a worldwide reputation. Located just below in the hierarchy, the crus bourgeois pride themselves on a very old tradition. The distinction was mentioned for the first time in 1740. The first classification carried out under the aegis of the Chamber of Commerce of Bordeaux, however, saw the light of day much later, in 1932 and included a total of 444 estates under the appellation “crus bourgeois of the Medoc”.
