Cuba warns of ‘American plans for violent attacks’ against the island; US rejects allegations – news

A State Department official called the Cuban allegations an effort to disparage its own citizens abroad. Havana caught an attempted terrorist attack from the USA last Sunday (10).

On Monday (11), the Cuban Ministry of the Interior warned about “plans by the United States Department of State and the intelligence community to increase subversive and violent attacks against Cuba in order to generate a social outbreak before the end of 2023”.

The North American department denied yesterday (12) that it was planning attacks against the island.

In an email to Archyde.com, an employee of the US agency rejected the idea. “The allegations that the United States is encouraging violent actions against the Cuban government are absurd,” responded the official, who was not identified by the media.

Last week, Havana published a list of more than 80 foreign citizens and entities it accuses of terrorism, including influencers, dissidents residing in the United States and a candidate for mayor of Miami-Dade County, Florida.

On Saturday (9), Cuba also said that it thwarted a terrorist plot hatched in neighboring South Florida, which involved an armed man arriving on Cuban soil from the USA via jetski.

Again, the person responsible denied the actions in the email sent to the British agency. “These most recent allegations are the latest iteration of Cuban authorities’ efforts to disparage emigrants exercising their freedom of expression. […]”, he responded.

A recent Washington government report claims that Havana also “gives safe haven to terrorists,” accusations that Havana denies.

The heated discussion highlights the frosty relationship between Cuba and the United States, which has barely improved since US President Joe Biden took office in 2021.
