A Cuban woman identified as Martha León was allegedly abandoned in the Darien jungle during her journey to the United States.

Images shared this Monday on social networks show the woman lying on the ground and practically without the strength to communicate or to get up.

I am “abandoned, dying,” says the woman shortly before another person adds that the lady has been in that place for six months and that, in addition, she has a fracture in one of her legs.

“Her right leg is broken,” says the man who allegedly found the Cuban woman in the middle of the jungle after almost a week of abandonment.

Until the writing of this note, no further details about the medical condition of the Cuban woman or if she was rescued after the complaint.

The Government of Panama reported in January of this year that a total of 5,961 Cuban migrants crossed the Colombian-Panamanian border in 2022, crossing the Darién Gap on their way through Central America to the southern border of the United States.

The figure was five times that reported by the Panamanian authorities in 2021, when 1,065 Cubans crossed the border section, known as the “green hell” of the Americas.

According to the report, 248,284 migrants from various countries made the risky journey, a record number that doubles that of the previous year, when around 133,000 crossed the Darién.

Cubans ranked fourth in that statistic, behind Venezuelans (150,327), Ecuadorians (29,356) and Haitians (22,435).

Of the total migrants, 28% (69,114) were women, 72% (179,170) men, and 16% (40,438) minors.
