Cusco: clashes so far leave one dead and 34 injured


One deceased and 34 injured left so far the clashes registered this Wednesday as part of the protests against the Government in the city of Cusco.

The death was confirmed by the Cusco Regional Health Management (Geresa Cusco)from where they indicated that it is about Remo Jinner Candia Guevera 50 years old, leader of the Provincial Federation of Peasants of Anta, who during the afternoon was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Antonio Lorena Hospital in Cusco.

According to Geresa Cusco sources, his death was recorded at around 8:50 p.m., after he underwent an operation for abdominal thoracic trauma due to the impact of a firearm projectile. This leader was present at the clashes that took place this afternoon.

The conflict took place on Avenida 28 de Julio, located in the district of Wanchaqwhere a group of demonstrators tries to reach the Velasco Astete International Airport. However, the troops prevented them from advancing, so these people began to throw stones.

As a result of this confrontation, 6 members of the National Police and 28 demonstrators were injured, as reported by the Cusco Regional Health Management. Most of the agents had to be helped by their colleagues on motorcycles.

The injured were referred to various medical centers

All the injured have been referred to the different hospitals in the city such as the regional hospital, the Antonio Lorraine Hospitalamong others.

In this regard, the Cusco Crime Prevention Prosecutor, Eduardo Paulette Barbieriindicated in RPP News that the injured officer will require a craniotomy, since he suffered a serious injury from a stone to the head.

He also pointed out that none of the troops in charge of controlling the demonstrations in Cusco have bullets in their pistols, since all the weapons were subjected to a review during the morning.

Along these lines, he indicated that the reports of a protester wounded by a bullet are false and pointed out that this person was hit by a pellet.

The prosecutor also indicated that so far there are eight detainees for this demonstration and that they have already talked with the leaders who were told they had the right to protest without violating people’s rights. Despite this, he regretted that those who protest seek to arrive violently at the airport.

“At this moment, what we have urged the population. We have spoken with the leaders in the morning and we told them that they can protest in the entire city of Cusco and we are going to accompany them with all the responsibility of the case, but I do not understand why their belligerent intention of wanting to enter the airport. The Police and the Prosecutor’s Office have reached an agreement: detainees yes, injured no and much less deaths, ”he said.
