In addition to the purchase price, customers usually also have to pay a bottle or can deposit for the product of their choice. If you then bring the empties back to the supermarket or discounter after enjoying the drink, you get the deposit back. At least usually when nothing goes wrong. In the case of a Rewe customer, this process apparently did not run smoothly, how tz.de reported.

on Twitter he made his case public and published a photo of his receipt. He had received it in a branch in Neustadt am Rübenberge in Lower Saxony. To his tweet he wrote ironically: “Thank you, Rewe and Veltins, that the Pülleken box with empties is not recognized. And then I hand them in empty and can pay 1.50 euros for them. Wrong input. Yes, should have checked on site, blah blah.”
And indeed, the customer had a cost item on his receipt that is suspicious. This was “empty box” and was measured at an amount of 1.50 euros. According to his own statement, the customer had handed in an empty box and not bought it.

What exactly went wrong with the deposit machine cannot be said. Normally, branch employees in supermarkets jump in and, if necessary, issue a deposit receipt by hand if the machine does not recognize empties or crates. Whether or not this happened in the case described remains unclear.
It is also not possible to understand exactly why the cost item “empty box” on the Bill showed up. If a deposit receipt has been created, the cashier scans it and the corresponding amount of the receipt is automatically transferred to the total purchase invoice. In the case of a deposit voucher created by hand, the content would also have to be entered manually at the checkout.
Customer denounces supermarket failure at Rewe – company has not reacted so far
The latter variant certainly harbors the potential for error. If a customer does not immediately notice an incorrect cost item on the receipt – as in this case – he can hardly prove the error afterwards. This is what happened to the Rewe customer. In addition to Rewe, he also marked the Veltins brewery in his post. So far, however, neither the supermarket chain nor the beer manufacturer have responded to the tweet.
Despite all the trouble, the Rewe customer from Lower Saxony will probably be able to get over the loss of a small amount of money. A man from the same federal state recently proved that you can really make money with empties. He collected a deposit for a PlayStation 5 for a year – and got almost 800 euros from Real paid out. (kh)
