The men’s watch is worth 30,600 francs. They are probably Rolex Daytonas – a gift from the future mother-in-law.

That’s what it’s about

  • A couple wanted to export two luxury watches – probably Rolex Daytonas – from Switzerland.

  • However, they were caught at customs.

  • Now they have to pay additional import taxes of 13,000 euros.

  • They also have a criminal case on their hands.

That happened

At the end of December, the Singen main customs office discovered two luxury watches with a total value of around 71,000 francs from travelers from Switzerland at the Bietingen border crossing – on the border with Thayngen SH. Only when asked by customs officials did the Dutch driver say he was bringing two high-priced brand watches from Switzerland.

As the man said, the future mother-in-law bought and gave the 29-year-old and his 26-year-old fiancée each a watch in Switzerland. While the young man’s watch, worth 30,600 francs, was still packed in the center console of the car, the women’s watch, worth 40,500 francs, was already adorning the wrist of his passenger.

This is how the customs officers reacted

Since the value of the two watches had exceeded the travel allowance many times over, they were asked to declare the watches at the Bietingen customs office, the Singen main customs office wrote in a statement. The young man then went to the customs office building, but left it again a short time later to continue his journey.

Since experience has shown that clearance in these cases takes longer, the couple was stopped again and asked for proof of customs clearance. As the customs officials suspected, the young man had not declared the watches properly and had not paid the duties due.

When asked why no customs clearance was carried out despite a request, the Dutchman replied that he had wanted this, but after a short wait he decided to continue the journey without customs clearance.

These are the consequences

Criminal tax proceedings were initiated against the owners of the watches for failing to register the watches and import duties of around 13,000 euros were levied.

The couple also has to expect criminal punishment from the main customs office in Karlsruhe, which took over the criminal tax proceedings.
