Customs officers from Perthus, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, discovered this Tuesday, June 7 during a control at the Boulou toll four alligators aboard a van, reports this Thursday France Blue Roussillon.

The animals were alive. They are safe and sound. The French Office for Biodiversity visited the site. One of the experts confirmed that they were indeed Mississippi alligators, a protected species, whose transport and detention is strictly supervised and regulated.

The driver and his passenger, of German nationality, had no proof allowing them to convoy these animals. They were arrested and taken to the gendarmerie in Pollestres, on the outskirts of Perpignan.

According to France Bleu Roussillon, the alligators were transferred to the Crocodile Farm located in Pierrelatte in the Drôme.
