Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel pleaded guilty on Monday to assaulting two teenage girls in a hotel in Sydney and was fined 1,500 Australian dollars (1,000 francs).
The 27-year-old runner was arrested the night before the 2022 Worlds road race on Sunday in Wollongong, a queen event of which he was one of the big favorites. After taking the start, he gave up following regarding thirty kilometers.
Van der Poel was initially summoned to court in Sutherland, a southern suburb of Sydney, on Tuesday, but he pleaded guilty on Monday and was ordered to pay two fines, respectively of 1000 dollars and 500 Australian dollars.
“At around 10.40pm on Saturday, a man was involved in a verbal altercation with two teenage girls aged 13 and 14 at a hotel in Brighton-Le-Sands. According to the alleged facts, he pushed the two teenage girls, one falling to the ground and the other being thrown once morest a wall, causing a small scratch on her elbow“, said the police.
