Cyclist uses AirTag to recover bike lost by airline

A cyclist named Barry Sherry used a AirTag to track and retrieve his bicycle, which had been lost by an airline on a trip to Switzerland. Born in the state of Virginia, in the United States, he planned to cycle through the famous Alps of the European country – a program that ended up having to be canceled.

According to Sherry, her trip proceeded normally, leaving Washington DC for London and then Zurich. Your bicycle, according to information from CNNhowever, stopped in London, without giving any sign that it was moving towards its final destination.

That’s when the cyclist decided to talk to an attendant at British Airways and show the bike’s location on your iPhone. Although the attendant was impressed with the AirTag’s ability to show the real-time location of luggage, she was unable to identify the location and merely reassured Sherry that he would have her bike within 24 hours.

@British_Airways. Well at 8:22pm my bike was still parked at Heathrow. The last flight to ZRH departed at 7:45 pm. Another day passed and no one did anything to deliver my bike. You’ve had my bike since Sunday. What does Sean Doyle think? Here’s a map. Bring my bike.

The problem is that, as you might have guessed, this all took well over 24 hours to happen. A few days went by and nothing from the bike US$8 mil show up at Sherry’s hotel—which prompted him to charge the airline.

After not seeing much progress despite posting repeated complaints, the cyclist decided to also tag American Airlines and Heathrow Airport in his posts, which seems to have had an effect. Soon after, on a Friday, he finally saw his bike’s location update and received a message from British Airways saying that it was on its way to meet him.

My bike’s long nightmare is over. Separated and scared for five days and missed my bike trip to Switzerland. A @British_Airways couldn’t locate it while I knew exactly where it was the whole time. Arrived in Luxembourg today and took a tour of France. Required to @juliathelast for help today.

In addition to its high price, the bike also has sentimental value for Sherry, who was diagnosed with cancer more than a decade ago and saw cycling as an outlet for her health problems.

14 years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and the only time I wasn’t thinking about it was when I was riding my bike. The rest of the time you’re dwelling on it, but I never thought about the cancer or the treatment when I was cycling.

Although she missed the chance to cycle through the Swiss Alps, Sherry managed to receive her bike in time to meet friends and other cyclists who had previously participated in the famous Tour de France.

Still according to him, if it weren’t for AirTag and the real campaign that was created on Twitter X involving the bike’s journey, he would probably have to go back to the US capital to try to get it back.
