The iPhone 12 could also be recalled in Switzerland

Switzerland could also request the recall of these phones, excluded from sale in France, because of too strong radiation.

On September 12, Apple was banned in France from marketing its iPhone 12 model, due to exceeding the specific absorption rate (SAR) limits set by European Union regulations. The manufacturer had fifteen days to bring the phone back into compliance, probably through an update. Apple announced last week that this would be the case.

This matter, however, came back to Parliament in Bern, where National Councilor Marionna Schlatter (V/ZH) questioned the Federal Council on the lack of reaction in Switzerland: “With such clear indications coming from abroad, is there no federal department that checks compliance with DAS values?” she asked the Federal Council

Mutual recognition

In his response, he said he had “taken note of the temporary ban on marketing the Apple iPhone 12 in France, due to a slight exceedance of radiation levels (DAS values)”. And added: “If Apple does not take corrective action, the French regulator has announced that it will order the recall of the iPhone 12 and report to the European Commission and EU/EFTA member states. This means that France’s recall could also be valid in these countries, as well as for Switzerland via the agreement between Switzerland and the EU on the mutual recognition of conformity assessments (MRA).”

That said, the Federal Council recalls that no authority in Switzerland “currently exercises market surveillance on compliance with radiation standards (SAR values) for mobile phones. An interministerial working group, under the leadership of the Federal Department of the Interior, is at work. The Federal Council will decide what action to take once the work is completed.”
