“Cynicism”, “it’s a revaluation that we need”, “the metal of hypocrisy”: the new 2-euro coin in tribute to caregivers is not unanimous

On this International Day of Nurses, Belgian caregivers would like to recall the need to revalorize the profession, which is facing serious shortages. A situation aggravated by the health crisis.

Like every year, International Nurses Day will be held on May 12, the date of birth of Florence Nightingale. On this occasion, the entire sector is mobilizing around the world around events to celebrate these professionals who have been particularly affected by the health crisis. By way of recognition, coins will be distributed at our premises to doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, pharmacists and paramedics. Nearly two million 2-euro coins will indeed be put into circulation during the year in tribute to the efforts made by doctors, nurses and other members of the healthcare staff during the coronavirus pandemic. The appearance of the new coins was unveiled this Wednesday by the Federal Minister of Finance, Vincent Van Peteghem (CD&V), at the University Hospital of Ghent.

A tribute received quite coldly among the main interested parties. “We have seen a lot of reactions of anger and nervousness since this announcementlaments Martine, head nurse at a large Brussels hospital. We can speak of pure cynicism when we know that we are currently facing a serious lack of attractiveness in the profession, the various budgets released are far from sufficient and the staff is at the end of its rope. to be upgraded. The feeling that emerges is that we don’t need coins but investment for an entire sector, completely worn out and neglected by our government”.
