On the banks of Oued Souss, in front of the Al-Amal neighborhood, in the territorial influence of the Tekoine urban district (Bay), fires occur every day, with the onset of darkness, related to the professional activities carried out by some of the fenced warehouses located in the area.

The residents of the Al-Amal neighborhood of Ait Melloul and the neighborhoods overlooking Oued Souss sounded the alarm about the renewed daily suffering they are experiencing as a result of these activities, which are mainly related to burning rubber tires.

According to what the resident reported, the sky of the area is filled at night with clouds of black smoke and fires that illuminate the valley’s stream with their tongues, and moments later, unpleasant odors begin to spread, depriving the residents of the neighborhood and neighboring neighborhoods from breathing fresh air.

The affected people confirmed that this scene is repeated daily, criticizing the lack of intervention by the local authorities in the Tiquin district to reduce this suffering, despite the many complaints and interventions carried out by the residents since 2017.

Those affected indicated that the neighboring residents suffer from chest, respiratory, and allergic diseases, pointing out that these symptoms are widely spread among the residents of the Al-Amal neighborhood and neighboring neighborhoods, including Tamzart Tamrset, as it is the area that witnesses the most burning operations.

Those affected stressed that the activities of these warehouses deeply undermine the efforts made by Morocco in the field of the environment, and also contradict the lofty speeches of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, through which he has been stressing the necessity of paying attention to the environment and climate, as well as the challenges that our country has been facing in this regard since. They considered that the silence over what they called “environmental crimes” could only be explained by complicity, because these fires have become a daily and organized activity that takes place inside the aforementioned warehouses and on the banks of the valley, in a dangerous disregard for the health and safety of citizens.

The residents held full responsibility to the regional authorities in the Agadir Idaoutnan prefecture and the local authorities in the Tékouine district regarding the dire health and environmental repercussions of this issue, directing their appeal to the Minister of the Interior to intervene urgently to stop the repercussions of this “disaster.”
