Dalibor Svrčina Upsets Cameron Norrie in Shanghai Masters First Round

Czech tennis player Dalibor Svrčina advanced to the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai on October 8, 2026, after defeating Cameron Norrie 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The qualifier navigated a high-pressure match against the experienced Brit to secure a valuable victory after successfully battling through the qualification rounds.

Svrčina Takes the Opening Set 6-3

Svrčina started the match hesitantly. After the Brit won his service game to love, the Czech tennis player had to fend off two break points on his own serve. He managed to handle the pressure, which subsequently boosted his momentum. The native of Ostrava broke his opponent’s serve first and, after erasing another two break points in the following game, established a 3-1 lead. He maintained his advantage and captured the opening set 6-3 in 41 minutes after breaking Norrie a second time at 5-3.

Continuing his strong form, the Czech player broke the Johannesburg native’s serve again at 2-1 in the second set using deep shots. However, Norrie responded by significantly tightening his game and improving his returns. Svrčina failed to hold his serve three consecutive times, allowing Norrie to win five straight games and take the second set 6-3.

Undeterred by the second-set loss, the player coached by Marek Jaloviec troubled the experienced Brit with excellent net play and broke Norrie’s serve to love in the third game. Although Norrie immediately leveled the score at 2-2 by breaking back, Svrčina continued applying pressure from the baseline and at the net. At 3-3, the qualifier earned another break, successfully consolidated it to lead 5-3, and closed out the match.
