Everything is decided. Comunicaciones FC and CSD Municipal, the two most popular and winning soccer teams in Guatemala, will face each other in the semifinals of the 2024 Clausura Tournament. Glory and history are in dispute in this new edition of the national classic that will be seen in a double game.
Comunicaciones advanced to the semifinals after defeating a good Cobán Imperial. The Prince Charming team won a great championship in the qualifying phase and even led some days. Finally, at the end of matchday 16, the Cobanero team finished fourth in the table and had to face a Comunicaciones team that had a streak of six games without winning.
History weighed on the series as the creams broke their losing streak at the Cementos Progreso stadium with a goal from Juan Luis Anangonó who also reappeared after several dates without being able to score.
In the second leg, played at the José Ángel Rossi, Alta Verapaz, everything looked like the local team could make it difficult for Comunicaciones, but that was not the case. The current champion responded on the Cobaneros court and gave them a 0-2 (Anangonó and López) to ensure their presence in the round of the best four.
The classification from Municipal to semis was carried out in a different way. The team led by Argentine coach Sebastián Bini reached the quarterfinals as first in the regular phase (six wins in seven games), but when they stepped onto the field of the Santa Lucía stadium on their visit to Deportivo Malacateco (eighth) they succumbed 3 goals to 2.
The scarlet team bet everything for the return at the Manuel Felipe Carrera and looked for a comeback against the bulls from the first minute. After the end of the 90 minutes, the red fans ended up celebrating as their team beat Malacateco mercilessly with a resounding 4-0.
After Antigua’s victory over Xinabajul in another of the quarterfinal keys, the confrontation between reds and creams in the semifinals was finally known since Municipal is the best classified of the four teams still fighting for the title and Comunicaciones is the last.
While The semifinals will begin on Wednesday, May 1 with Mixco vs Antigua GFC at the Santo Domingo de Guzmán stadium at 3 p.m., reds and creams will enjoy their series on Thursday the 2nd and will finish it on Sunday the 5th.
