At the end of March, heavy rains in southeastern Brazil left at least 25 dead in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo. At the same time, a heat wave hit the country in March, with oppressive temperatures in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. In February, Rio Grande do Sul had been smothered by extreme temperatures due to an “extreme heat dome” coming from Argentina.

In this context, experts attribute extreme phenomena and meteorological instability to climate change, with temperatures around 1.2ºC higher overall than in the mid-19th century, causing an increase in floods, droughts and heat waves.
