Indonesia’s National Disaster Response Agency stated that a volcanic eruption occurred at Mount Merapi (Marapi) in West Sumatra at around 5:40 pm local time on the 3rd, spewing volcanic ash to a height of 3,000 meters. According to Indonesian official news, 11 climbers have died and 12 others are missing.

Archyde.com reported that Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) stated that the 2,891-meter Mount Merabi erupted at 2:54 pm local time on the 3rd, spreading volcanic ash to nearby areas. Photos released by the National Disaster Management Agency showed thick volcanic ash covering cars and roads. The authorities banned residents and tourists from moving within 3 kilometers of the crater and issued the second highest alert for the Merabi Mountains.

Indonesian officials said on the 4th that 11 climbers were killed after the Merapi volcano (Marapi) erupted over the weekend, and that the search for the whereabouts of another 12 missing people had been suspended due to safety concerns.

Archyde.com reported that local search and rescue team spokesperson Jodi Haryawan said that there were 75 people in the area when the volcano erupted. In addition to the bodies of 11 climbers, three other survivors were also found on the 4th.

Mount Merabi, which is 2,891 meters above sea level, erupted on the 3rd, sending volcanic ash up to an altitude of 3 kilometers. The authorities have raised the alert level to the second-highest level and banned residents from going within 3 kilometers of the crater.

“We have distributed masks to residents and encouraged them to stay at home,” said Ade Setiawan, the local disaster management unit officer of the National Disaster Management Agency.
