Six people have died in Australia from respiratory problems after a severe thunderstorm, three are in critical condition. The storm had thrown up pollen that can trigger severe asthma.
(AP) – Pollen kicked up by a storm has caused deadly respiratory problems in at least six people in Australia’s second largest city, Melbourne. The storm had already swept over the metropolis on the south coast of the continent on Monday and triggered serious health problems in thousands of residents.
A total of more than 8,000 people are said to have presented themselves to the medical emergency service. Five patients died during the week, and a sixth victim succumbed to the effects of the respiratory disease on Saturday evening, the health authorities announced on Sunday. Five other people were still in intensive care, three of them fighting for their lives.
According to previous knowledge, the thunderstorm had caused ryegrass pollen to burst and spread across the entire city. The smallest pollen particles could penetrate deep into the lungs of those affected.
